As part of the celebrations for the Day of the Cuban archivist, the Court System received the pleasant news that one of the guardians of the judicial treasures, Mercedes Cabrera Gil, was awarded the 180th Anniversary Medallion of the first archive of Cuba, distinction with which the National Archive recognizes people who stand out in the task of protecting and preserving the historical memory of the nation.
Mercedes, also in this November, turned 26 as archivist of the Popular Provincial Court (TPP) of Matanzas, vast time in which he has gained the affection and admiration of his companions for his dedication and delivery to the judicial body where he has developed all professional life. She, from the place that belongs to her and is passionate about it, helps to ensure the endurance of the documentary funds of the judicial system. And he confesses that the best thing to be an archivist is to conserve, protect and adequately assist the requests of the judicial units that need their services.
What is the most difficult thing you have faced in your passage through the Matanzas TPP archives?
The organization of the files after the transfer of the file from the old headquarters of the TPP to the new one, which could be overcome with much effort, perseverance and support from managers, judges and other workers.
What do you think of the schools-courts collaboration?
The relationship schools-courts is very good because it offers the possibility of entering young people in the beautiful world of conservation, and of awakening in them the interest in this work.
How has your work influenced your daily life?
This work has transcended to my home, hence the systematic order, cleanliness, the habit of storing valuable documents using different conservation techniques: protect them from moisture and sunlight, avoid dust, use protection suitable for human health, etc.
What has it meant for you to receive the 180th Anniversary Medallion of the first archive in Cuba?
It is a great honor and commitment, I did not expect such a high distinction. I thank the People's Supreme Court, the TPP, the union, for proposing me, and the National Archive of Cuba, for believing me deserving of this Medallion.
To the question of what valuable and Cuban document I would like to leaf through, he answers (as a faithful lover of Cuban literature): The first copy of the work Mirror of Patience. In addition, he confesses that he not only wants to leaf through it, but also to keep it properly. However, she is very satisfied because her hands have passed files that constitute heritage, such as the cause in which Fidel Castro defended a case in the municipality of Colón, in Matanzas.
And finally, for now, why is the work of archivists important in the judicial system?
This is a work of vital importance, since it retains all the historical memory of the court and many of the files found here are part of the history of our city and also of the country. An archivist must have a lot of responsibility, work with organization, neatness and, above all, have a great sense of belonging for what he does.
